繁殖及筑巢 :
冢雉不会以体温来孵化鸟蛋，而是将它们埋起来。它们的蛋有很大的卵黄，占整只蛋重量的50-70%。它们会以枯萎的植物来筑一个大型的小丘为巢，雄雉会负责保持巢内的温度以孵化鸟蛋(用咀探测温度)。另有一些则会靠地热，或是靠阳光晒暖的沙来孵化鸟蛋。一些物种甚至会根据环境的变化而作出相应的孵化策略。

它们的非群居性令人怀疑雏雉如何确认同种的其他成员。另外亦发现个别物种具有对移动模式的本能性认知。

雏生的冢雉没有卵齿，会以其强壮的爪来破开蛋壳及挖掘走出地面。它们孵化时就已长满羽毛及很活跃，能够飞行，平衡身体，奔跑追踪猎物及独立生活。
